Voices in the dark. Valerius Flaccus’ reinvention of the nyktomachy scene,

 Anotace přednášky: 

 Nyktomachies are an important structural element in ancient epic. They can easily be identified by their clearly demarcated time frame that reverses the conventional start and end point of traditional battle scenes. Despite their shared framework nyktomachies can take on many different forms from a dangerous nightly scouting expedition and a nocturnal ambush on one or more individuals to a night raid on the enemy’s camp and its sleeping soldiers to the destruction of an entire city, as in the case of the most famous nyktomachy in ancient literature, the sack of Troy with the stratagem of the Wooden Horse. On account of the ethically questionable nature of this rarely employed military strategy that is generally conducted as a last resort in which the attacking party surprises the sleeping enemy, the majority of fully developed nyktomachy scenes in ancient epic contain private discussions among the leaders as well as a war council in which the reasons for conducting the nocturnal attack are addressed at length. At the same time, due to the secretive nature of the nightly mission, the subsequent attack itself is carried out in silence. The Flavian poet Valerius Flaccus deviates from this narrative pattern and thereby changes the nature of the nocturnal fighting as well as its impact on both sides.

Byzantine Models of Time in a Northern Russian World Chronicle of the 15th C.

 Anotace přednášky: 

The Paleya genre, an area long neglected because of its complexity, in the last decades gained more and more scholarly attention. The so called Short Chronographic Paleya, compiled in the Novgorod area in the early 15th century, is part of this tradition, linking Old Testament history, para-biblical traditions and chronography from the creation of the world to the Byzantine emperor Romanos I. Lakapenos (10th century).
For the first time, the Church Slavic text of the Short Chronographic Paleya is now made accessible to scholars who are not Slavists by a critical face-en-face edition (Church-Slavic and German) with commentary. Jewish and Christian non-canonical, canonical and chronographic texts — most of them inhereted from Byzantine sources, some preserved only in Slavic, some preserved in parallel traditions — offer a multi-faceted picture of the historical knowledge, an educated monk in Northern Russia had at that time.  Building on current findings — above all on the latest studies of the Paleya tradition, made in a Russian-German-Bulgarian team — the paper analyses the models of time in the Short Chronographic Paleya, exemplifying paths of transmission and methods of choosing and compiling the sources.

Přednáška se mimořádně uskuteční v pondělí 18. listopadu 2019 v 18h 

na ÚŘLS FF UK v místnosti 147 (Celetná 20, Praha 1).    

Anotace přednášky: 

Viaceré sabelské nápisy sa vyznačujú prítomnosťou štylistických prvkov, ako sú aliterácie či etymologické figúry. Komparatívna analýza týchto nápisných dokumentov odhaľuje spoločné princípy v ich metrickej štruktúre, ak ich posudzujeme z hľadiska akcentovej metriky založenej na striedaní prízvučných a neprízvučných slabík.

Rytmus viacerých juhopicénskych nápisov (Bellante, bojovník z Capestrana, Crecchio) je vybudovaný na opakovaní sa určitého počtu slabík a prítomnosti alebo absencii prízvuku na týchto slabikách. Tento systém je porovnateľný s metrickou organizáciou niektorých paleovenétskych nápisov (Lozzo Attestino, Pernumia / Cartura) a pridať možno aj niektoré pelignijské nápisy (Casnar, Herentas). Otázkou zostáva, či ide o spoločné dedičstvo z praitalického obdobia alebo o výsledok kultúrnych kontaktov v archaickom období.
