Anotace: In this talk I discuss the genre of the ancient Greek and Roman novel: its origins and later influence across the centuries. I also address a more controversial topic affecting the Greek novelists specifically, namely if and to what extent they might be engaging with material written in Latin. This raises fundamental questions about what it means to be ‘Greek’ under the Roman empire.
