The Reshuffling of the Biblical Texts in the Bible and Liturgical Books

Dominique Stutzmann (Head of the section of Latin paleography, Institut de recherche et d’histoire des texts, CNRS, Paris)

Přednáška se koná ve čtvrtek 9. března 2023 od 18:00 hodin v místnosti C144 (Celetná 20, Praha 1).

Anotace: The essence of liturgy consists in organizing the veneration of the deity. In Christianity, a religion of the Book, this celebration is inspired, founded and organized on a prior textual referent, that of the Bible. The history of the organization of the biblical text(s) is too vast to be discussed here in detail, and we shall concentrate on aspects of the transmission of the Latin text during the central and late Middle Ages. First of all, we will recall that the biblical corpus appears with noticeable variations, even in the manuscripts that transmit it as a whole. Then, we will present the liturgical manuscripts and discuss in more detail the organization of the liturgical offices, in particular two supererogatory services, the little office of the Virgin and the office of the dead. In the textual tradition of these two texts, copied in great numbers (since they are present in the books of hours), we can see occurrences of hybridization phenomena that cast doubt on the modalities of copying and transmission of the text.
